I have a almost 1 year old cairn terrier. She is crate-trained and is in her crate to sleep at night, and while we are at work or leave the house. When sleeping at night she has a blanket and pillow and does fine with it. While she is crated during the day – whether for 5 minutes or 5 hours, she chews on any blanket that is in her crate. (she has toys in her crate also) We have gone through a number of blankets and have even left her without a blanket during the day, but I feel bad that she has to sleep on the hard plastic. Does anyone know of a good blanket or rug that is indestructible – or some other solution?
Terriers are natural born chewers and diggers. Sounds like you need a Kuranda bed. They are chewproof, and can be just hosed down to clean them. No affiliation and all that stuff – yada, yada. They are somewhat like a hammock on a stand, so very comfy. We are purchasing them for our new shelter, so our dogs won’t have to sleep on the floor, and we won’t have to clean bedding.
Google "Kuranda", they cost a bit more but are well worth it.
try a rubber mat that goes in the bathtub, easy to clean and will make her more comfortable when she sleeps. As well as hard to tear up.
Take her on a walk before you put her in the crate and ahe will be too tired to tear up the bedding. My pup is 9 months old and this seems to work for him.
The dog is fine w/o the blanket. If it was a necessity she wouldn’t chew it, she’d lay on it.
My friend has a dog who has a 10′x10′ enclosure in his basement. A really nice doggie bed in one corner of the enclosure and the rest is concrete. The dog plays w/ his bed and sleeps on the concrete LOL.
Dogs aren’t like use. Don’t feel bad if she choses something you wouldn’t choose. She’ll be fine!!

You know, I was looking at a catalog of my husbands and I am almost 100% positive there was a dog bed in there that is "chew-resistant". I believe the name of the catalog was "Duluth"
there’s two things you can try. I would suggest that first, your dog gets a walk or some outside fetch time with you before going into the crate, for at least 15 to 20 minutes. Second, there is a spray called bitter apple, you can buy this at most local petstores such as petco or petsmart, there are knock off brands, but they smell bad as well, the bitter apple spray is bad tasting to animals, but not vey smelly and works the best for our terrier. During the day, instead of having a blanket for sleeping, have a rubber bottomed bath mat, spray the edges of it with the bitter apple spray, it will not get chewed…lol. I also used the bitter apple spray to train my baby ferrets not to nip my hands, it’s VERY effective for training almost any furry critter not to chew or bite things. Good luck.
there’s no problem with the dog sleeping on hard plastic. Both of our dogs seem to prefer sleeping on a cold, hard floor (or driveway). Just take the pillow and blanket out of the crate. Your dog will be fine. You’ll enjoy your dog more if you don’t worry about stuff like this.
use vet bed it stops all problems with elbow soreness etc.
