About a month and a half ago I adopted a 6 month old pit bull/ hound mix from a local shelter. They believe she had been a stray since birht and has had no owners and therefore no training or socialization whatsoever. Overall she is a very good dog, she’s learned sit, stay, and lay very quickly. I have every intention of taking her to obedience training however she has ringworm and I am not able to take her until she is completely cured since it is contagious. Recently, she has begun barking which I’m not sure if she is trying to get attention (bc she does get quite a bit of attention) or what and she has begun biting. It started off as playful biting and though I think she is still playing she’s become much more forceful in the recent week.
While I am away from the house she is crated. Once she is in her crate she is fine but she does not like to get in it. She will hide under the bed, behind the sofa, etc and try to bite me when I try to get her out. Any ideas on how to fix these problems? Like I said obedience training is in her near future but until she’s ringworm free I need some ideas, thanks!
Just some of the downside of shelter adoption. You certainly need some professional advice on this. my unprofessional advice would be to leave a lead on her collar ( not check chain, in case it gets caught ) and when she hides under the bed etc, get the end of the lead and call her name (once ) , and this way you will be able to draw her to you, then praise her and or give a reward.
Hopefully a pro, will give you a better idea.
Best of Luck
This dog just doesn’t know what is expected of it. You should read up on some good dog training skills and find a class so that you can work on obedience commands with this dog.
Visit this site to find some good books to get you started. Remember that dogs get better at behaviors they get to repeat, bad ones too. And they repeat behaviors they get rewarded for, so instead of just trying to stop behaviors in your dog, think about training your dog to do things you like.

This may sound harsh, but the problem is you, not the dog. You should do some reading about dog psychology. This will teach you how to understand what your dog is thinking and how they see the world. It’s important for you to understand the world from a dogs point of view because they can’t see it from yours. Obedience training isn’t the answer, establishing yourself as the pack leader is. Obedience training will only be effective if you maintain a strong stable leadership roll in your dogs life. This is easy to do, but you must understand you dogs world first, from her point of view.
Some required reading:
"The Dog Listener" by Anne Fennel
"Cesar’s Way" by Cesar Millan
"For the Love of a Dog: Understanding emotion in your dog an yourself"
I suggest reading them in that order. Ms Fennel and Mr. Millan have very similar philosophies but explain things a bit differently. Once you understand your dog, obedience training will be a snap.
Exercise, discipline and affection. In that order.
Good luck and kudos for adopting a shelter dog.
there is a book called "Cesar’s way" its a dog training book its really helpful
take her to a trainer today
I’m very glad that you’re planning to take her to obediance classes.
Now, this can easily be fixed with time and effort. She is getting attention, even if it is negative from you when she barks and bites, correct? Dogs don’t care whether it’s negative or not. Either way, it’s usually a game to them. She is also about 7 months old which is an adolesence stage. Therefore, she is going to be testing your boundaries and authority. If you are establishing a dominant role, then that is good. If not, you need to start now.
When she barks, ignore her. This may be hard to do, because she will continue for a while, but just ignore it. This calls for positive reenforcement. Reward her with a treat and praise for welcomed behavior. Same with biting. You need to ignore her if she bites. Stand up, walk away, and return minutes later. Give a firm "No" or "Don’t" when she does this, and reward her when she stops.
Crate–very good. Do the same thing with treats. Lure her into the crate with a treat, and put things in there to keep her busy. She will learn that you aren’t going to play around and will also be rewarded that she goes in when you’d like her to.
Good luck.
stomp ur feet at them. always remember that they are afraid of you more than u are of them
She may not be getting enough exercise. It sounds like she may have been abused. I think you may need to be very stern with her when she bites but dont corner her and make her scared when she is in places like under the bed. She sounds like she does need some really good training. They told us with our dog that when he nips make a loud squel because there littler mates do this when they are babies and ignore him. It has worked but you have to stick with it. Good luck!
I agree with Heather M–wear her out! A long walk before bed, a rowdy game of tug of war, some fun chew toys…..whatever your dog is into. This will give her a "job" to focus on other than hiding from you when its time to kennel up. An electronic collar is an option, too, but I really would avoid it unless your trainer recommends one. P.s. GOOD FOR YOU for adopting from your local shelter!
